Lotus
In March 1965 at Cheshunt, Team Lotus presented to the press the new Type 38, who will run in May the Indianapolis 500 miles.
This is the first version tested by Jim Clark in the private practices without sponsors and race number.
This model is produced in limited edition of 200 RTR pieces numbered and guaranteed by added certificate.
Team Lotus begins at Indianapolis in the 1963 with Jim Clark, 2nd in the race.
In 1964, in the 48th edition, there are 3 historical facts :
The first pole position of a rear engine car ( by Jim Clark)
A terrible accident at lap 2 with the die of Eddy Sachs and Dave Mac Donald and the explosion of the cars.
The last victory of the traditional cars with front engine by A.J.Foyt.
In 1965 on the strart grid of classic 33 cars, only 6 are the front engine.
First row all with rear engines : A.J.Foyt in pole position, 2nd Jim Clark with his Lotus Ford # 82 and 3rd Dan Gurney with Lotus Yamaha # 17.
At the start Jim Clark is first, at the lap 2 leader is Foyt, after still Clark leads the race, lap 115 Foyt pulls into the pits with a damaged gear box, is race over.
Jim Clark wins, second is Parnelli Jones, for Jimmy is an historical victory, the first for a rear engine car, the first for Ford, that ends a string of Offenhauser victories that dates to 1946, the first for a foreign driver since Dario Resta in 1916, Jim Clark leads 190 laps of the 200 in total.
So Jimmy with this victory and the 2 titles of Formula 1 world champion in 1963 and 1965 becomes one of the greatest driver of any time.
Always in 1965 edition in the first row, Dan Gurney # 17 starts with the 3rd time, with his Lotus type 38, like that of Jim Clark, but white and red coloured for the Yamaha sponsor. The race of Dan is too short, at lap 42 his race over, cause timing gears.
Dan Gurney began his Indianapolis adventure in the 1962.
The 50th edition of the 500 miles of Indianapolis is in 1966. The official Team Lotus has 2 cars with the colours of STP, the main sponsor, # 19 is Jim Clark, winner in 1965, starts in the first row with the 2nd time, with poleman Mario Andretti and the 3rd George Snider.
With the second STP Lotus # 18 is Al Unser, in the starting grid in 23th position, in the race Al crashed in wall T 4 at lap 161 and he is classified in 12th final position.
At the start a big accident stops 11 of 33 cars, including A.J.Foyt and Dan Gurney.
Restart after one hour and 24 minutes and a great battle between Lloyd Ruby and Jim Clark, but at lap 166 Ruby is out of race.
But the big surprise is in the last 7 laps, when Graham Hill wins with is Lola Ford # 24, cause sme little problems at the cars of Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart.
Second victory with a rear engine car, from this moment any front engine car will win never at Indianapolis.
